IDEA’s survey will be inserted into the Fiji Times this weekend, on the 7th December 2013.
The survey is the first of its kind in Fiji. People fill out the survey to register with the IDEA Program; the survey will be used to help match individuals with jobs. The data from the survey will also be compiled in order to compile Fiji-specific statistics on the experiences of persons with disabilities in relation to employment. The survey also be filled out online at: http://work.idea.org.fj.
If you’ve already filled out the survey, please pass it on to someone you know who could benefit.
One of IDEA’s Heroes, or community champions, is Iliesa Delana, who won Fiji’s first gold medal in the 2012 Olympics. Delana says, “Persons with disabilities have great talents to contribute to their communities. I personally encourage all persons with disabilities to fill out this survey and participate.”
One woman who has already benefitted from filling in the survey is Mrs Alisi Dinati. Mrs Dinati saw a Fiji Times article on the IDEA Program and contacted the IDEA team. After filling in the survey, she was placed in employment with the Holiday Inn about two months ago. Mrs Dinati was the first person to get a job through the IDEA Program. Mrs Dinati is encouraging other persons with disabilities to fill in the survey and says, “Don’t look down on yourselves. Be positive! You know you have the ability to work, you should give it a try. Don’t lose hope!” Coming back to work after 15 years of staying at home has been an adjustment but Mrs Dinati is grateful to the Holiday Inn, to her understanding and supportive management and to her colleagues who have made the transition as smooth as possible. She says that being back to work has “built up my life again…and has been very positive for my family.”
After filling in IDEA’s survey, people can return them to their nearest Disabled Persons Organisation or nearest branch of the Salvation Army. They can also contact the National Survey Manager on +679 8659 422 with any questions.
