On the 10th December, 2013 a joint Psychiatric Survivor Association (PSA) and Include Disability Employ is Ability (IDEA)’s Education forum was held for persons with disabilities at the Pacifica Campus in the Fiji National University. Members of Fiji Disabled Organizations came to know and learn about available education opportunities for study, scholarships, accessibility, accommodation and policies that are in place in various education institutions.
The forum brought together representatives from the University of the South Pacific (USP), Fiji National University (FNU) and Australian Pacific Tertiary Centre (APTC) on what they offer in terms of programs, policies and infrastructure that accommodate and include persons with disabilities.
One of the panelists, Raijeli Bulatale spoke on the accessibility and the accommodation of disabled students and their newly established USP Disability Resource Centre. She talked about the importance of persons with disability to disclose the kinds of disability they have as soon as they are enrolled at USP because it would help them communicate to their coordinators on their disability and identify ways they could help.
“USP has a legal obligation to provide for disabled students once they disclosed their disability and they will work with them by helping them throughout their study so that they can successfully complete their studies.”
All representatives mentioned that their education institutions are open to all including persons with disabilities and anyone can apply for whatever field of study they are interested in and become whatever they want to be.
